- In 1898 the first library in Watseka was housed
in rented rooms above a shoe store. The first permanent library building
was constructed at 201 South Fourth Street and opened to the public on
Thanksgiving Day, November 24, 1904. Construction of a newly planned
addition began early in 1972, but an original wall of the building collapsed.
The entire library collection was moved to the basement of a nearby savings
and loan building until a new one-story structure was built. In 2003
the library completed an addition and remodeling project, which brought
the square footage of the building to 10,700. This construction was funded
in part by a grant from the Secretary of State and State Librarian’s
Office and with a City of Watseka Tax Increment Financing grant.
