- The Urbana Free Library was founded as an association
library in 1872. In 1874 it was converted to a tax-supported public
library, one of the first public libraries in Illinois. The Urbana Free
Library places emphasis on strong reference service, on materials for leisure-time
reading, and on programming for children and adults. The library's
collection includes over 288,000 books and recordings, with special strengths
in adult fiction, folklore, music, and films. Public access to the Internet
and a wide variety of special databases is provided through 60 public computers
and building-wide wireless. The library's local history and genealogy
department (the Champaign County Historical Archives) is one of the strongest
collections of its type in the Midwest and draws users from throughout
the nation. The online index to the department's collections--Local History
Online--has over 3 million entries. Operating as a small press, the library
has published a variety of items, including eleven books. The Urbana Free
Library has been ranked in the top 1 percent of public libraries in Illinois
and in the United States by American Libraries magazine. The current library
building was originally constructed in 1917 and enlarged in 1975
and 2005.
