Horizon Circulation - Holds     List of Categories

  1. Until recently, I was able to place requests for a specific copy or first available copy. Now I seem only able to request the first available copy. What happened to the "request specific copy" function?

  2. An item specific hold seems to take priority over regular holds. Why is this?

  3. We would like for our borrowers to get our items first on hold lists.

  4. All notices are printed by the borrower's home library, not the library where the item was checked out or the library where a hold is waiting for the borrower. It's very confusing for the patron, and we have been told by some customers that their home libraries are not notifying them if the item isn't being picked up there.

  5. It has been reported to LTLS that there is a problem with the hold queue getting transferred over from an "acquisitions record" to a MARC record.

  6. When you place an item on request at the library, why doesn't the computer stop you and tell you that item is on the shelf at your library?

  7. Holds seem to expire unexpectedly.

  8. Can patrons place a request on a partial record? Recently was able to do this on a partial record of My Life by Bill Clinton, but thought this was not an option any more.

  9. When you want to make an item specific hold into a bib level hold, is there any way to change it?

  10. Why can't you place holds on items that are on order or just received? (And the record is already in Horizon). You have to wait for the actual copies to be added before you can place a hold.

  1. Until recently, I was able to place requests for a specific copy or first available copy. Now I seem only able to request the first available copy. What happened to the "request specific copy" function?

Item specific requests in Horizon continue to be a challenge, and there is no immediate resolution. Item specific requests do not follow any of the request rules we have in place, such as the rule that allow patrons in a queue to be the first to get an item owned by their library. However, item specific requests are necessary when a patron needs a specific periodical or volume. We have monitored the requests and find that only a very small percentage are item specific requests.

On October 17, 2004, LTLS turned off item specific request capability in LINCPac (the web catalog). This functionality will remain in the Horizon client. This means that patrons will not be able to place item specific requests but staff will still be able to do this for their patrons in the Horizon software.

  2. An item specific hold seems to take priority over regular holds. Why is this?

This is true. If a patron places a hold on a specific item, then the holds priority settings can't manage this and they are served in the order of placement, by only that item when it becomes available, for whichever patron is first in the queue. LTLS has added this issue to the Horizon enhancements, but there is currently no fix for this.

  3. We would like for our borrowers to get our items first on hold lists.

Holds are giving priority to patrons if the request is placed at the bib level. This continues to be a problem for item specific holds.

  4. All notices are printed by the borrower's home library, not the library where the item was checked out or the library where a hold is waiting for the borrower. It's very confusing for the patron, and we have been told by some customers that their home libraries are not notifying them if the item isn't being picked up there.

There is no alternative to this setup in Horizon at this time.

  5. It has been reported to LTLS that there is a problem with the hold queue getting transferred over from an "acquisitions record" to a MARC record.

Catalogers are doing this with a merge in Horizon. When they merge the acquisitions record with the MARC record, the hold queue moves over to the new record.

  6. When you place an item on request at the library, why doesn't the computer stop you and tell you that item is on the shelf at your library?

The Horizon software allows holds to be placed from within a library and from a remote location, such as the web.

  7. Holds seem to expire unexpectedly.

We would need a specific item barcode and patron barcode to troubleshoot this issue.

  8. Can patrons place a request on a partial record? Recently was able to do this on a partial record of My Life by Bill Clinton, but thought this was not an option any more.

If this is a question about 'on order' records, this is available on Horizon. You can place requests on 'on order' titles if the library that has ordered the item allows requests for this type of material. This is determined by the itype the library has assigned to the 'on order' item information.

  9. When you want to make an item specific hold into a bib level hold, is there any way to change it?

No. You have to cancel the request, place it again and shuffle the queue as necessary.

  10. Why can't you place holds on items that are on order or just received? (And the record is already in Horizon). You have to wait for the actual copies to be added before you can place a hold.

Titles that do not have any item records for any location will not allow holds to be placed. You cannot place a request unless at least one item allows requests.
