The Mattoon Public Library, established in 1893, occupied several rented facilities before receiving a Carnegie gift. The building at 1600 Charleston Avenue opened in September of 1903. In 1995 the library completed a $2.4 million expansion project that doubled the size and made the facility fully accessible. The library houses the James Lawrence Aviation Collection focusing on the airplanes of the Second World War. The Local History Collection includes a summary of City Council minutes from the founding of Mattoon through 1972, as well as complete minutes from 1960 to date. Mattoon City Directories dating from 1900 are available too.
