LOCAL HOLDS TEST POLICY APPROVED

At the October 26 LINC Policy Council meeting a Local Holds test policy, recommended by the Local Holds committee and amended by LINC Policy Council, was passed. All LINC library directors have received the text of the amended test policy which allows for certain materials to be assigned to a local hold itype and then be requestable by patrons of that library only.

The test of local holds will begin on December 1, 2006 and will run for two months. At the end of that test period, comments and input on the test will be solicited from the LINC Directors Group members before a final decision about Local Holds is made by LINC Policy Council.

Library directors have the month of November to prepare and education patrons about the test. If your library is interested in implementing Local Holds on December 1, please send an email to Pat Boze, pboze@lincolntrail.info

LINC CATALOGING POLICIES ADVISORY COMMITTEE

At the October 26 LINC Policy Council meeting, a LINC Cataloging Policy Advisory Committee was created to evaluate the current LINC Cataloging Policies and whether they need to be changed or revised. Most of the policies are over ten years old, and there have been many developments in relation to Illinois State Library cataloging standards, introduction of Dublin Core and other metadata issues, and development of new OCLC cataloging products. The committee will be chaired by Nanette Donohue, Champaign Public Library.

LINC DATA CLEANUP

LTLS automation staff is in the process of running queries that are helping us identify problem data in Horizon. If you receive an email with an attached list of problem records (bibs, items, or patrons), please have your staff correct the problems as soon as possible. The first list we are sending is a list of patrons who have a lost block in their patron record, even though the item is not actually lost.

13-DIGIT ISBN REQUIRES HORIZON UPGRADE

The move to 13-digit ISBN numbers requires an upgrade to both Horizon and LINCPac. This upgrade has been scheduled for January 9, 2007 and will require several hours of downtime. More information about the actual downtime will be posted as details become available.

This upgrade also means that each Horizon staff workstation, in all LINC libraries, must be upgraded as well. The Horizon 7.3.4 CD-ROM and installation instructions will be sent to each LINC library director during the week of November 13. The upgrade can be pre-installed before the January 9 date but should not be used until the server upgrade has been finished on January 9.

As a result of the upgrade, Horizon will have the following enhancements:
  • The ISBN index (in both Horizon and LINCPac) will search for both 10 &13 digit numbers.
  • Syndetics will be able to display enhanced content in LINCPac (cover art, reviews, table of contents) for any item with a 13 digit ISBN
  • The Edifact file format will be modified to allow for a way to send 13-digit ISBN’s to vendors.
  • Printing of purchase orders will be modified to allow for 13 digits.
