LPC Recommendation: Rescind

Serials-Serials Publication Patterns

Policy:

The publication pattern for each serial title must be current and accurate.  There are two times when a publication pattern record may not be accurate:

€When the publisher has changed the frequency, enumeration, or chronology of a serial title so the existing pattern is no longer accurate; and

€When the publication pattern was not defined correctly in Dynix.

Both of these circumstances can lead to incorrect prediction of forthcoming issues.  Therefore, libraries should follow established policy when encountering either of these situations.

Context:

When a publisher changes the frequency, enumeration, or chronology of a serial title, libraries should not modify or continue using the existing publication pattern.  Libraries should instead indicate the "old" publication pattern (the one which is no longer accurate)as a "deceased" publication pattern by completing the Span field in the "old" publication pattern as follows:
 Ex: Ended July 28, 1999, vol. 122, no. 14
and then create a new publication pattern for checking in subsequent issues of the serial title.

When a library believes a publication pattern was not defined accurately in Dynix, libraries should send complete information on the serial in question to the LTLS Cataloging Center, with a reason stating why they believe the existing pattern is inaccurate.  This publication pattern will be examined by appropriate staff who will then decide what the correct publication pattern should be.  Libraries will be notified of any changes in an existing publication pattern.

Adopted: 12/10/1999

Reason for Rescinding: Shared publication patterns are no longer used with the Horizon system.

Rescinded: 9/15/2004

General-Policy on Dial Access for Libraries

Policy:

Lincoln Trail provides one port and a local phone line for this purpose.  It is intended that this port be used only by non-automated libraries and Lincoln Trail will monitor the use of the phone line.  The port is a title query only port.

Context:

To facilitate resource sharing among libraries, the Automated Libraries of Lincoln Trail make their database available to libraries through dial access.

Adopted: 10/8/1990

Reason for Rescinding: Dial access is no longer used with Horizon.  The web catalog is available to anyone.

Rescinded: 9/15/2004

General-Peripheral Maintenance

Policy:

Lincoln Trail will negotiate a maintenance contract with Micro Systems for repair of peripherals attached to LINC. € Annual maintenance charges are significantly lower than with Dynix

Context:
€ Will honor equipment warranties passed on by Dynix
€ Parts will be offered at a 35% discount
€ Includes semi-annual on-site preventive maintenance cleaning for terminals
€ Includes all labor charges on repairs
€ If not cost effective to repair because of the price of parts, will so notify Lincoln Trail
€ As a local company Lincoln Trail will be able to reduce shipping

Adopted: 3/31/1994

Reason for Rescinding: Dial access is no longer used with Horizon.  The web catalog is available to anyone.

Rescinded: 9/15/2004

General-Peripherals

Context:

Lincoln Trail Libraries System has negotiated a discount with Dynix, Inc. for purchase of peripheral equipment.  The Automated Libraries Council policy previously adopted said that all peripheral equipment would be purchased from the automation vendor with a discount to be applied to the computer fund.

Policy:

After serious review and consideration, the ALC Executive Committee recommends that peripheral equipment be purchased solely from Dynix and that the discount price be passed on to the member libraries.  The committee further recommends that the Automated Libraries Council immediately take action to develop a mechanism to provide funds for an ongoing computer fund to be shared by all automated libraries.  It is further recommended that this action item regarding sole purchase of equipment be monitored regularly by Lincoln Trail Libraries System staff for review of prices of outside vendors; at a minimum, this policy should be reviewed in early 1994.

Passed: 8/26/1993

Reason for Rescinding: This arrangement is no longer available with Horizon.

Rescinded: 9/15/2004

The following indexes will be made available through the Horizon staff search screen:
€ Video Title List
€ Video Author/Title/Subject Keyword
€ Periodical Title List
€ Periodical Title/Subject Keyword
€ Sound Recording Title List
€ Sound Recording Author List
€ Sound Recording Author/Title/Subject Keyword

Background:

Cataloging- Release 141 MARC Mapping

Policy:

It is recommended that the MARC maps be set to map all data in as usable a form as possible.  This will make the data available for use in the system, even if it is not chosen for use at this time.

Background:

Mapping of data from MARC records to Dynix Horizon bibliographic records affects the usability of the data.  The primary use of this data is display.

Status codes are used in Ameritech Library Services¹ Dynix the Horizon software to indicate the current availability of an item.  Status codes should be used to indicated a temporary location that affects availability, such as mending or binding.  Status codes can also be used to indicate a temporary or permanent condition such as missing or lost.
