LINC Principles of Cooperation

Lincoln Trail Libraries Systemıs shared automation service program, LINC, is a computerized library system listing information about the resources of libraries in East Central Illinois and providing a gateway to resources and information throughout Illinois, the nation, an the world.  LINC provides access to diverse collections of participating multitype libraries that serve local clientele.  Each libraryıs contributions are valued because they enhance and enrich the whole

The Year in Review

FY2002 was filled with activity, as LINC continued to grow and expand its horizons and usefulness to the citizens of east central Illinois.

Ten libraries came online

This year proved busy as 10 libraries moved from the status of pre-online to online.  This meant that their collections were completely added to LINC, their patrons were also entered, staff were trained, Dynix software for each library was configured, local area networks and workstations were set up, internet connectivity was achieved, and publicity about the big event was given to users.  Libraries celebrating in this activity were

Eight new libraries join LINC

With notice from the Illinois State Library that Live & Learn automation grant money would be unavailable during FY2003, LTLS staff worked diligently to recruit libraries to automate with FY2002 Live & Learn funds.  By the end of June, 2002, eight libraries signed contracts to join LINC and fully automate their collections.  Those libraries are

Web-based resources

Realizing that the world is changing and that more and more valuable information is stored on web sites, LINC Policy Council determined a policy and procedure for adding web-based resources to LINC.  Web-based resources, or web sites, are now being cataloged and added to LINCıs bibliographic database.  Patrons can do subject, author, or title searches on LINC and locate both print materials and valuable web sites, including links to that site, that enhance and expand on the types of information that have been traditionally found in the LINC catalog.

Inclusion of these web sites in the LINC catalog is based upon rigorous selection procedures.  Cataloging of these sites is done by the LTLS Cataloging Center on OCLC before being exported into LINC.  A web-based submission form was developed so librarians could suggest potential sites for inclusion in LINC. The LINC Directors Group also approved a mechanism for sharing costs for this access and cataloging project.

IPac

LTLS staff, epixtech, and a test group of libraries worked throughout the year to install, configure and test iPac, the newest web catalog for LINC.  This product will be released for general use in FY2003.  Preliminary review of its use in test mode is yielding exciting  statistics about the use of this product by both in-library and remote users.

User-friendly new components of the first version of iPac include enhanced cataloging information, such as book covers, table of contents, summaries, and reviews; scoping to local holdings for each library that has a PAC license;  links to useful web sites that correlate to author, title, or subjects for a specific title; and a new logo for LINC.

FY2003 will bring additional customization of iPac and the addition of a Spanish version of this product.

PC products update

As epixtech released new versions of PC Reliance, Pac4Windows, and Cat4Windows, LTLS staff again utilized its Œsneakernetı to install and upgrade these 3 PC-based software products on workstations in the LINC libraries.  A total of 87 libraries were visited by LTLS Automation staff for this purpose alone.

Dynix Release 182

In June, LTLS staff upgraded the Dynix software to Release 182.  Several known bugs were fixed with this upgrade.  New Dynix functionality added as a result of this upgrade included  Œstatus agingı, floating collections, and changes to the software necessary for the installation of iPac.

New services

In January, 2002, email notices and patron self-renewal functionality were implemented for all LINC libraries.  Patrons who have email addresses in their patron record now receive the first overdue notice via email.  Holds notices are also sent via email if the library agency is configured to print holds notices.   Self-renewal means that patrons can renew items (if the item allows self-renewal) through the online catalog.

OCLC Batchloading

LTLS sent 3 files of new holdings to OCLC, as part of the statewide batchloading project done 3 times per year.  All systems in Illinois submit new holdings to a statewide site, these files are then merged into one.  This eliminates duplicate bibliographic records being sent to OCLC.  LTLS also sends deletes 3 times a year separately, directly to OCLC.

Cataloging Center

The LTLS Cataloging Center cataloged materials for 83 LINC libraries throughout the year.  A total of 21,994 new materials books, kits, videos, dvdıs, audiotapes, web resources, and others- were cataloged, while 6,418 retrospective conversion materials were added to LINC.  The LTLS Cataloging Center also runs WebCheck on a weekly basis and replaced marc report, marc report

Support

LTLS staff continued to provide automation support to the LINC libraries throughout the year.  This included troubleshooting of varying problems and issues, recall requests, configuration changes, security updates, and other duties that serve to support the automation activities of the LINC libraries.    Some examples of this support include
