Standards: MARC, XML, AACR2, Dublin Core

David Dorman, Consultant at Lincoln Trail Libraries System, gave a presentation on four different standards: MARC, XML, AACR2, and Dublin Core. He presented a review of MARC and its characteristics, a review of AACR2 and its characteristics, a review of XML, and a review of Dublin Core. A question and answer period followed his presentation.

Background: LINC Database Standards Committee Re-establishment

Merdy spoke about how the LINC Database Standards Committee came to be re-established as a result of the implementation of local subject headings (MARC 690).  Copies of the two policies regarding local subject headings (Cataloging—Local Subject Headings, and Cataloging—Local Subject Headings Implementation) were handed out to committee members.  One of the tasks of the DSC is to review and approve/not approve local subject heading nominations. There are two local subject headings that were approved by the LINC Policy Council before the DSC was re-established; these headings are:   [foreign language] language materials, and Leveled readers.  Mary Bissey explained what leveled readers are.

Policy re DSC

Merdy handed out copies of the General—Database Standards Committee policy approved by the LINC Policy Council on December 13, 2001.  The committee reviewed the policy, noting the areas that are part of the Committee’s responsibility.

Accelerated Reader note: Study Program Information Note (MARC 526)

Lincoln Trail Libraries System has received requests to provide Accelerated Reader information in the bibliographic records in LINC.  Merdy indicated that the MARC 526 field for Study Program Information could be used for this purpose.  Karen confirmed the benefit of providing this information.  Before the next meeting Merdy will obtain a list of the titles of the Accelerated Reader books, their reading levels and point values, as well as investigate the possibility of a subject heading which could enable a subject search for all Accelerated Readers.

Audience Level Notes in Video recording Bibliographic Records

Mary Bissey proposed that the DSC consider requesting the addition of movie ratings in bibliographic records for video recordings (videos, DVDs, etc.).  Merdy explained that there is a LINC policy (Cataloging—Audience Level Notes—Statement of Clarification) which states that audience level notes that label or restrict use of material will not be included in bibliographic records in LINC.  Several members of the DSC expressed the need for MPAA ratings in LINC bibliographic records.  At its next meeting the Committee will draft a request for reconsideration of this policy.

Subject Headings in Spanish

Mary Wilkes Towner asked that the Committee consider allowing the addition of subject headings in the Spanish language to bibliographic records for items in Spanish.  Mary indicated that she believes there is a thesaurus of Spanish/English subject headings. She will research this before the next meeting.

The next meeting will be held June 4, 2002.

The meeting was adjourned at 11:30 a.m.
