The OPAC Sucks |
| |
Karen Schneider, Research & Development
Consultant, College Center for Library Automation (Florida) -
Presentation (PPT)
Library technologists and library professionals have talked about the OPAC as
an inadequate search interface for discovering what is in our libraries. It
is incomplete, the search capabilities are poor, and there is very little interaction
with the user. Karen Schneider will give us an overview of the issues and
opportunities for future catalogs. |

Developments in the OPAC World: A
Panel Discussion
Moderated by Karen Schneider
Many libraries and agencies are working on unbundling the OPAC from the ILS. The
catalog is the most important piece of the ILS for our customers. Four
libraries or agencies have been invited to present their ideas on how they have
implemented an unbundled catalog or how they plan on implementing one. Schneider
and panel members will explore this issue.
•World Cat Local
Chip Nilges, OCLC -
WorldCat Local pilot builds on WorldCat.org, which allows Web access to the world's
richest database for discovery of materials held in libraries. Through a locally
branded interface, the service provides libraries the ability to search the entire
WorldCat database and present results beginning with items most accessible to
the patron.
•Library Thing for Libraries
Kate Sheehan, Coordinator of Automation, Danbury (CT) Public Library - Presentation
(Web)
Danbury Public Library is the first library (ever) to incorporate Library Thing
in its OPAC, with cool features such as tagging, similar books, and links
to other editions helped along by over 200,000 Library Thing members.
•Endeca
Cindi Holt, Information Services Manager, Phoenix Public Library -
Presentation (PPT)
Phoenix Public Library implemented Endeca for its library OPAC in 2007 and will
showcase their product and examine what led the library to make this decision. |

What the Studies Tell Us about
the Future
Jasmine de Gaia, OCLC; Georgia Needham, Vice President, Member
Services, OCLC
- George's
Presentation (PPT) - Jasmine's Presentation (PPT)
OCLC has been a leader in looking at the library user market place to
see how people use our libraries and what they think of libraries compared to
other pieces of the information landscape. De Gaia and Needham will
provide an exciting overview of these studies and give us insights on what we
need to think about for our future access tools. |

ILS Issues for Trustees
Karen Schneider, Research & Development Comsultant, College Center for Library Automation (Florida)
