Several unsuccessful attempts were made to start a library in the years from 1903 to 1932. In 1932, the members of the Padlock Circle of the Methodist Church donated and borrowed books from the Illinois State Library and opened a library in the Methodist Church. The Women's Club became the sponsors of the library in 1939 and moved it to the Presbyterian Church. Miss Agness Hoult became the librarian and continued until her death in 1961. The City Council passed an ordinance establishing a library in 1957 and levied a tax for its support. For several years the library was located in the City Building. In 1974, the library moved to the former Nazarene Church. On January 19, 2004, the library moved into a newly remodeled building at 108 North Illinois Street. The city furnishes the building and utilities.
