Special Events

1. Celebrating Forty Years and Looking to the Future
Fall 2005 • 3-8 p.m. • CPDU: 4
On January 6, 2006, Lincoln Trail Libraries System will celebrate its 40th birthday. LTLS will celebrate the past and, in the coming months, develop a strategic plan for the future. To kick off this planning process, member library staff, administrators, trustees, and members of the community at large are invited to participate in an event called “Looking to the Future.” The program will include exciting speakers and stimulating discussion. Please plan to help in developing the future direction of your library system by attending this event to be scheduled for late September or early October.

2. Spanish for Librarians: An Intensive Course for Librarians and Library Staff
April 4, 11, 18, 25, and May 2 • 1-4 p.m. • CEU: 3
This basic library Spanish course, led by instructor Marilyn Best, consists of five three-hour sessions. The course will introduce basic Spanish and provide participants with specific vocabulary to enable them to interact with patrons. Participants will be given materials for practicing and applying their skills between sessions. CLaSS Fee: $125.00 Non-subscriber fee: $200.00 Registration

3. Illinois Library Advocacy Day
April 2006
Lincoln Trail Libraries System strongly encourages member libraries to send at least one representative to Library Advocacy Day. This is an important time to bring the library message to policy makers in Springfield. Your participation will lend greater strength to the collective voice of colleagues from academic, public, school, and special libraries from LTLS and around the state. LTLS will release the date of this event as soon as it is announced; carpooling will be arranged closer to the date of the event. There is no fee for this event, but registration is required.

4. Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library and Museum Tour
Tentative Date: June 8, 2006
LTLS will coordinate a bus trip to Springfield to tour the new Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library and Museum Complex. Lunch will be on your own. CLaSS subscriber fee: $30.00 • Non-subscriber fee: $40.00

5. “Ask a Consultant” Via iLinc

6. Prescription for Success: Consumer Health Information on the Internet

National Library of Medicine Librarian Tammy Mays will provide an introduction to consumer health information. She will cover the information-seeking behaviors of consumers, the basics of MedlinePlus.gov, DIRLINE, ClinicalTrials.gov, and other reliable web pages such as those from professional medical associations and advocacy groups. The workshop will cover sites devoted to pharmaceutical information for consumers, drug-interaction databases, and herbal information. Non-subscriber fee: $35.00.

7. Searching with FirstSearch

This course will cover selecting databases to search and searching them effectively. Hands-on practice will involve several databases, but WorldCat will be a primary focus. Some familiarity with using FirstSearch will be expected. Configuring the user interface will be referred to but will not be covered in the workshop. The Statewide Illinois Library Catalog (SILC), a subset of WorldCat, will also be discussed. Non-subscriber Fee: $35.00

10. Library and Park District Partnerships

Kathy Wicks of The Urbana Free library will present a program on partnerships between libraries and parks and recreation agencies, why the combination is logical, and what types of programs are currently out there. Participants will see examples of festivals, book clubs, road races, library music series, combined use of buildings, etc. The program was warmly received at the 2004 National Recreation and Parks Congress on community partnerships between libraries and recreation and park agencies. Wicks has a dual background in librarianship and in parks and recreation and will provide a well-balanced perspective on partnerships of this type. Non-subscriber Fee: $35.00

11. Reading the Future of the Public Library

This program will introduce participants to the techniques, which form the basis of a non-judgmental, patron-oriented readers' advisory service for fiction readers. At the conclusion of the workshop, participants will be aware of the role of readers' advisory for fiction readers in the public library and some of the reference sources and activities necessary to perform that role. 17. Library Fund Development

Participants will begin this workshop learning about library development and finish it focusing on capital campaigns. Roxanne Frey will present “Finding Library Donors in Your Own Back Yard: the art of identifying, cultivating and soliciting charitable gifts from your own library patrons.” She will answer questions such as who to target your energies towards, how to identify donor prospects, and ways to offer opportunities to make a gift. Dianne Harmon of Joliet Public Library will present a program on disaster planning with the community. She will review establishing the library as a community crisis information center, her library's grant project to develop the library as an information cross roads, and experiences of other libraries and their communities that have used the model developed for Joliet Public Library. 32. Designing and Delivering Online Surveys

Need to find out what your patrons think? What about using your library's web site to survey your community through online quizzes and surveys? Join instructor Paula Dempsey from DePaul University Library to hear about both the theory and the nuts and bolts of online surveys. Participants will explore the differences between fee-based and free products as well as compare a few free web-based survey tools. Learn how to phrase questions in order to learn what you want to know, effective survey design, and strategies for reaching the target audience. Non-subscriber fee: $45.00. Registration

35. LINC Training

MediaMall (Overdrive)
For LINC libraries, MediaMall is a new initiative that provides e-books and downloadable audiobooks through the LINC Pac. Training will be provided in how to place holds on these items, checkout, and download content to appropriate devices. The cost, dates, and times will be announced.

Horizon 8
Training for Horizon 8 will be announced after the Beta testing of this new product. Dates and times are tentatively slated for spring of 2006. The cost, dates, and times will be announced.

WebReporter

Training on the interpretation and statistical reporting of LINC will be provided in an open session held in the LTLS boardroom. If requested, an iLinc session can be opened as well for staff who cannot attend in person. iLinc is a web-based conferencing tool allowing you to log on to a web site and listen to the discussion via telephone. The Dynix Horizon system at the core of LINC is a complex system of functional and database components. To work effectively on LINC, a basic understanding of how these components operate and interact is essential. This session will define these integral parts of the system, such as modules, agency records, accounts, security records, item types, and other codes.
