2. It's Alive @ Your Library: Preparing for Teen Read Week

NoveList is a readers' advisory resource that assists fiction readers in finding new authors and titles. Starting with a favorite author or title, the reader is directed to similar authors and titles. This workshop explains how the settings in the FirstSearch Administration module affect the FirstSearch Public module; it covers configurable functionality such as scoping in WorldCat to library-specified holdings, linking to library-specified resources outside of FirstSearch, and many other useful settings. Workshop participants will have the opportunity to actually configure their library's FirstSearch account.

9. Market Research on a Dime

Market research is not just for the big organizations. Donna Fletcher, a consultant in market research and strategic analysis for companies such as DDB Worldwide, Eli Lilly, Kellogg's, Leo Burnett Advertising, McDonald's, and Sanford Corporation, will demonstrate how small organizations can implement consumer research. The program will cover the importance of consumer research, determining the type of research, getting the maximum value out of research, and doing research in a cost effective manner.

10. Brown Bag Lunch: Latina/os in East Central Illinois: Demographics and Issues

(r)Evolutionary (e)Books is the cutting edge brainchild of Charlotte Johnson and William Harroff who have been both book artists and librarians for twenty years and are noteworthy ebook evangelists. Participants will learn how to adapt the (r)Evolutionary (e)Books programming model for successfully introducing, integrating, and promoting ebooks for the benefit of their own unique communities. They will also discuss the future of the ebook in libraries.

Weeding is an often forgotten, yet equally important part of maintaining a library collection. This workshop will describe the reasons, techniques, and benefits of weeding and will address the weeding of all types of library materials, including adult and children's collections and print and non-print materials.

22. Annual IREAD Virtual Showcase: Superheroes - Powered by Books

This year's IREAD theme, “Superheroes - Powered By Books,” focuses on superheroes and comic books. The IREAD virtual showcase is a statewide V-Tel aimed at bringing librarians from around the state together to begin preparation for summer reading 2005. Exploring the Environmental Protection Agency's Web Site

The Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) web site is extensive and deep, comprised of more than 300 distinct areas and over two million pages of html text and PDF files. It contains a vast amount of environmental information and serves many audiences. EPA’s Office of Environmental Information (OEI) has developed hands-on training sessions conducted with small groups of librarians to share tips and methods about how to navigate http://www.epa.gov.

This two-hour program will provide an overview of how to put together a referendum. A panel discussion with staff from area libraries that have successfully passed a referendum will also provide tips and tricks on pursuing a referendum and pitfalls to avoid.

30. Child Development Basics

Many children's librarians find their way into children's services by chance, and they may not have had formal education in working with children. UIUC Professor Carla Moeller will provide an overview of child development and address questions on selecting age appropriate materials, planning programs, and just plain working with kids. 36. LINC Training

Getting Started • August 24, September 15, October 25, January 26, and April 19 • 9 a.m.-12:30 p.m. • CPDU: 3
The Dynix Horizon system at the core of LINC is a complex system of functional and database components. To work effectively on LINC, a basic understanding of how these components operate and interact is essential. This session will define these integral parts of the system, such as modules, agency records, accounts, security records, item types, and other codes. Knowledge of these components will be assumed in all other training sessions. The session will continue with an introduction to the Horizon interface and basic searching techniques.

Basic Circulation
• August 25, September 20, October 26, January 27, and April 20 • 9 a.m.-12:30 p.m. • CPDU: 3
This session will cover all essential functions, such as Check Out and renewal, Check In, adding and editing borrower records, Fast Adds, and processing the various blocks on a borrower's record.

Advanced Circulation • August 26, September 23, October 27, January 28, and April 27 • 9-11:30 a.m. • CPDU: 2
This session will cover advanced techniques in circulation, adding requests for borrowers, reviewing the hold queues, reports and notices, and the group editor menu. Also, there will be a discussion of the policies and procedures for sharing materials between agencies, reviewing procedures for filling transit holds, and integrating the flow of items between automated and non-automated libraries.

Adding Items

Bibliographic records form the core of LINC. The accurate and thorough addition of new items ensures the long-term usefulness of the system. This session will teach fundamental details about bibliographic records and holdings records. Activities will focus on the correct methods for adding items to the system, including strategies for complete item searching, and identifying serials and monographs accurately.

The LINC Administration workshop will cover all currently available reports (monthly/daily) including reports based on item status, changing and updating the calendar, and group editor menu (advanced techniques).

This class is designed specifically for staff who check in serial holdings through the serials module.

This class is designed specifically for serial staff who need advanced skills such as publication patterns and vendors within the Serials module Prerequisite: Basic LINC Serials.

Home Services
• October 20 • 1:00 - 2:30 p.m. • CPDU: 1
The Home Services module allows you to circulate items to borrowers who are handicapped, hospitalized, or otherwise unable to visit the library. Participants will learn about the basic structure of the module; understand the basic data elements required to operate it; and learn about the concepts of routes, readers advisors, borrower’s profile and borrower’s log, and setting up a borrower as a home service user.

What’s New in Horizon • October 6, 9 a.m.-12 p.m., and October 12, 1-4 p.m. • CPDU: 3
A demonstration will take place on the Home Services, Serials, Acquisitions, and Inventory modules followed by a question and answer period for each module. This demo is for libraries who do not currently utilize one or more of these services and are interested in expanding their use of LINC.
