TECHNOLOGY SERVICES: Basic Staff Competencies for Horizon Training

Horizon is a Windows-based software package.   During the LINC Policy Council meeting on October 14, 2003, members of LPC agreed that it is the responsibility of the libraries to ensure that their staff know and understand navigation in Windows.   Below is a list of those basic competencies.

Staff should understand and be able to do the following before coming to Horizon training.

Computer Basics:

  • Turn on your computer
  • Log in to Windows if required by your internal network
  • Shut down/log off a PC correctly

Navigation:

  • Navigate the desktop (double-click icons, right-click for menus, etc.)
  • Mousing skills
  • Use the Windows task bar
  • Use the Start menu
  • Use windows in Windows (resize, move, minimize, maximize, etc.)
  • Use menus and dialog boxes
  • Locate a PC's disk drives
  • Access disk drive information

Internet Access

  • Launch a browser
  • Find different websites as needed
